The knife arrived sharp, mostly. It required a little time with a 1200x ceramic file to bring the edge out. It’s had very limited use but slices vegetables with precision and has carved seasoned hickory and split maple kindling, retaining a surprisingly sharp edge throughout. The sheath is a basic, classic design that fits well, unadorned except for a polished brass band at the top. The handle, like most pukkos I’ve seen, tapers toward the blade and lacks any sort of guard or finger stop. I like knives to be sharp so this is a bit scary and invites caution when using the tool. The handle, though, is exquisite. The stacked birch bark is grippy and slightly resilient, affording a great grip. The pommel, unlike most puukkos I’ve seen, tapers from the top of the blade toward the bottom. This undercut angle allows one to slip the little finger behind the pommel to keep the hand securely in place, while allowing the index finger or thumb to cover a good length of the spine. Great control when cutting without risk of the hand slipping toward the blade. Then there’s the curly birch of the pommel: it’s oiled to bring out a stunning grain. The peined-over tang and brass nut are faired close to the pommel to create a truly beautiful tool. The pommel is separated from the stacked birch and brass ferrule by thin rings of dark leather or rubber, producing a visually-pleasing artwork. This is a handsome knife that takes an impressive edge with little work and seems to retain it well. I think I’ll enjoy using it.
