I have been throwing a pair of these for 7ish years now. They're heavy and unlike lighter axes they require little to no push and just fly incredibly smoothly but there is a learning curve to their weight. I've also used mine to split wood, as a hammer, to setup camp and pretty much what you would use an axe for.
While it is nice to look at, the quality of the steel is extremely poor. Arrived with massive pits in the cutting edge. Now it needs to be profiled again so to remove those massive flaws. Question the temper of the blade now as well considering there is some discoloration as well.
I also own the Iroquois tomahawk and the Bearded Axe also purchased here. By comparison this Ship builders Axe is heavy and weighted oddly. It's a great show piece make no mistake and now sits in my office and gets comments. But this axe is not a thrower. The haft on mine is poorly joined and misfitted. This cause the head to go wildly flying off with every throw. I've used my own mallet to try to more firmly set the head but what's done is done. Also, despite arriving just as sharp as the other axes the edge of this axe does not bite. Myself and 2 other friends spent an afternoon trying this axe and between us and over easily 150 throws none of us could get this axe to stick. Every throw with it resulted in the head detaching and bouncing. We have not had an issue with the other axes including the others I mentioned above. Great looking axe. Hefty as ****. But mine is definitely not a thrower.
These axes are a fun and functional axe to throw.
